Growing up gay in Texas was a complex experience. The pressure to fit into cultural and societal boxes made coming out a scary concept, even though I witnessed my family’s support and unconditional love for my gay aunt and uncle. As a competitive cheerleader, I was also exposed to more gay peers than most others, but despite the resources and camaraderie, the pressure to belong was impossible to ignore. It made me painfully aware that even though I was one of the lucky ones with support, many find themselves alone.
Each year during Pride Month, I find myself questioning how genuinely brands are supporting the LGBTQIA+ community beyond rainbow logos and one-off campaigns, many of which are simply checking a box.
I do acknowledge that we are privileged to even have this discourse. While it was once groundbreaking to celebrate Pride Month at all, we now expect it from brands that want to be known as modern and inclusive. However, it has become a commercial celebration rather than a commemoration of the rights our predecessors fought for over the past decades. Sure, it’s a fun time to congregate in the streets, but it’s also imperative to show your support beyond words and rainbows by asking yourself how you can authentically and impactfully celebrate Pride.
