Eric Ochoa started his YouTube channel 17 years ago. The name came from his own — Eric G. Ochoa — with “Super” added because it sounded cool. That’s the kind of origin story that only works in retrospect, when the channel has millions of followers and a series called Cholo Adventures that became a cultural touchstone for Latino comedy online.
The first viral video was called “How to Be a Cholo.” It got 5,000 views. Eric thought he’d made it.
He wasn’t wrong — he just didn’t know yet how far the road went.
What was your first viral moment?
A video called “How to Be a Cholo.” I grew up around that world — Chicano culture, the neighborhood. I remember it got 5,000 views and I was like, wow, I made it. When I saw it had 100-plus comments, I was like — people actually care. That kept the wheels going.
What is your go-to ritual after posting?
At the beginning, I was obsessed with watching the numbers in real time. Now I put up a post and it’s like — if it works out, it works out. You slowly start to realize you’re doing more content that you love. Sometimes you catch a trend and have to find yourself again, but it’s still fun to understand the algorithm and how to play the game.
What advice would you give yourself when you were just getting started?
Don’t give up. Don’t let the comments get to you. It felt very lonely at the beginning. But now there’s a big group of people, and I feel like there are more eyes on it. Get yourself around a good group of people who want to see you win. I’m very proud of my circle.
