AI is Changing How Brands Are Getting Discovered…and it’s Through Creators

Something quietly shifted in how people discover new brands, and most brand teams haven’t caught up yet.

AI-powered search, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini, doesn’t return ten blue links and ask people to figure it out. It reads the internet and delivers one answer. And that answer is increasingly built on creator content, not your brand’s website.

According to AirOps’ 2026 State of AI Search report, roughly 85% of brand mentions in AI-generated answers originate from third-party pages, not brand-owned domains. AI is not pulling from the pages you’ve spent years optimizing. It’s pulling from what other people say about you.

Why AI is Relying on Creator Content

AI models are trained to prioritize demonstrated expertise, lived experience, and authentic opinion, and creator content delivers all three. A polished corporate landing page reads as marketing. A creator’s honest, informed perspective reads as evidence.

YouTube is now the most-cited social platform in AI-generated responses, appearing in 16% of LLM answers versus 10% for Reddit. The reason is structural: transcripts, chapter markers, timestamps, and metadata give AI models clean, extractable text. A single well-structured creator video can become a persistent citation source across thousands of AI-generated answers.

Reddit serves as the qualitative truth layer of AI search. Major AI developers specifically license Reddit data to counterbalance highly optimized SEO content. If YouTube is where AI learns what you do, Reddit is where it learns whether people actually trust you.

Instagram is evolving fast too. As of July 2025, Reels, carousels, captions, and alt text are now indexable by Google Search. Every public creator post is a potential citation.

Three Strategic Shifts Managing Your Creators

  1. Audit what AI is already saying about you. Run your top category queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Only 30% of brands remain consistently visible from one AI answer to the next, so knowing your gaps is step one.

  2. Brief creators for AI retrieval, not just engagement. Transcripts, timestamps, headers, alt text, and descriptive metadata are the structural signals AI extracts. Content without them is invisible to AI regardless of social performance.

  3. Measure citation outcomes alongside engagement. A 50,000-view Reel may generate zero AI citations if it lacks structural depth, while a 10,000-view deep-dive with clean transcripts may appear in hundreds of thousands of AI-generated answers. Both metrics matter. Neither is sufficient alone.

The Bottom Line

The brands winning AI search aren’t the ones with the biggest ad budgets. They’re the ones with the most citable third-party presence. When multiple trusted creators consistently advocate for a brand, those signals compound into a category authority signal that AI models recognize and repeat.

The brands that move now build citation dominance before their competitors do. The ones that wait will find themselves absent from the very answers their audience is already reading.
