We wanted to share this today because it’s Juneteeth! But we believe Black voices should be celebrated and amplified all year long.
What is Juneteeth?
Juneteenth (aka Emancipation Day) honors the end of slavery in the United States. This day is when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free–more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
What is the origin of Juneteenth?
President Abraham Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Although, it wasn’t until two and a half years later on June 19, 1865 that Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and with it, the end of slavery.
Is Juneteenth a national holiday?
Juneteenth was signed into law as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden just this past Thursday, June 17, 2021.
